Royal Airwing

The Royal Airwing, located on the southeast side of Dubai International (DXB), comprises a VIP terminal dedicated to the UAE Royal family and special interest flights, along with its related aircraft hangars and maintenance facilities. The open-span, eight-bay Royal Airwing Hangar is 600 metre wide and 110 metre deep, and will hold up to eight aircraft. At the front, the hangar has eight sets of doors that span 584 meters, each of which is 25.8 meters high Since the Royal Airwing’s facility opening in 2008, the hangars have been upgraded and optimised for a varying aircraft fleet in terms of size and type.

DXB Construction Stages
2008

First
construction

The Royal Airwing was developed along with its adjacent apron, aircraft hangars and a luxurious Majlis to serve as a terminal. Facilities for on-site maintenance and terminal processing were also built.

2013

First
renovation

Five years since the inauguration, a series of projects optimised all facilities of the Royal Airwing. This included additional parking spaces, support facilities and maintenance workshops.

2014 and beyond

Second
renovation

DAEP continues to develop and upgrade the Royal Airwing's facilities, including terminal renovations and additional support facilities based on requirements of new aircraft.

About This Project

Building the world's largest privately-owned aircraft hangar, worthy of Dubai’s Royal fleet

In 2008, DAEP had completed the construction and finishing of the Royal Airwing and Majlis terminal facility, making way for the start of flight operations. Along with the airwing parking hangars, the state-of-the-art majlis offers complete passenger processing facilities and an expansive apron area. With the growth of the royal aircraft fleet and new technology, however, the airwing is routinely upgraded to offer the UAE’s most distinguished passengers an unmatched travel experience.

As part of the latest upgrades in the Royal Airwing’s development, DAEP’s first task was to ensure that the eight hangars were tailored to accommodate new and wider aircraft types. Four of the hangars were tailored for the Boeing 747s, while the others were custom-built for specific-purpose aircraft types. One bay was tailored for the Airbus A380 and, alternatively, four Boeing Business Jets (BBJs). Another bay was made to meet the specifications for a Gulfstream IV, while also serving as a rotary wing and maintenance area able to accommodate a three-ton gantry crane for various servicing works. The also doubles as an air-conditioned helicopter maintenance area with a two-ton crane. A seventh bay was made for two Lockheed C-130J aircraft, with a dedicated Class B maintenance area equipped with a five-ton crane. To service the massive A380 aircraft, a dedicated bay was designed with an 80-metre span equipped with a 15-ton gantry crane for Class B maintenance.

While the parking hangars were now updated to house and maintain varying sizes and models of royal aircraft, DAEP also constructed spaces for ground support maintenance and external facilities. Carrying the vision of an unmatched passenger experience, the Royal Majlis and terminal were upgraded with smart airport solutions.
