Foundation

About This Project
Arriving at the world’s largest airport
With the success of cargo operations at DWC, DAEP was confident in facilitating a strategic design for the passenger terminal.
The design was structured into three main parts; the arrivals building, the departure building and the concourse. All three sections were made to be flexible to increase capacity from 5 million passengers to 7 million passengers per annum. Recent expansion projects increased this number to 29 million. The arrivals and departure halls were built to have identical dimensions, with a length of 210 metres and width of 90 metres.
For a smoother land-side passenger experience, the arrival and departure buildings are connected by a large public hall along a 450-metre curbside. Both halls feature all related services from check-in on the departure side to baggage reclaim on the arrivals side. The concourse, which is much larger with a length of 255 metres and a width of 120 metres, was expanded for a variety of passenger facilities. DAEP created the infrastructure for a series of boarding lounges, a special transfer lounge, a duty-free area, catering services as well as the central technical rooms. Additionally, architects made a partial mezzanine floor for an airside restaurant, a Business Class lounge and management offices that have landside-only access.
In all, the Passenger Terminal is flexible and functional, effectively meeting the growing requirements of passengers and Dubai’s aviation industry with the implementation of cutting-edge smart airport solutions like biometric immigration. In the future, curbside check-in with autonomous robots will also be possible.
