The Air Traffic Control Tower at Al Maktoum International (DWC) stands as 92 metres. Fitted with state-of-the-art systems tailored for Dubai’s climatic conditions, the Control Tower includes a back-up control room and a traffic control simulator for training. It is an integral part of the growing air traffic operations at the airport.

AMI Construction Stages
2006

First construction

As the laying of the first runway completes at DWC, the construction of the Control Tower began for the inaugural cargo flights. A design was implemented to reflect Dubai’s persistent aviation ambition.

2010

First renovation

The first cargo flights take off, putting the new control tower and runway to the test. As cargo operations increase from year to year, the Control Tower is upgraded to accommodate more air traffic controllers.

The Ultimate Phase

Ultimate phase

The ultimate design for AMIA features two control towers to manage the five-runway system. The second tower planned by DAEP will be connected to both airports via smart systems.

About This Project

Raising a beacon for the world’s flights

To build the DWC Control Tower, DAEP factored in several variables, including climatic conditions, height variations, and constantly evolving architecture style. While promoting advanced functionality and flexible infrastructure for evolving equipment, DAEP finalised an iconic design that combines form and function.

For optimal viewing of the airfield, the glass in the control room is widely glazed and chemically tempered to provide transparency without deformation. The glass also includes a must-have, state-of-the-art condensation system to prevent any hindrances from severe weather conditions.

The structure is a made from double-level steel over a 70-metre concrete shaft, which houses air-circulation equipment and all cables routed from the Control Tower. The design's simple, geometric shapes based on the Arabic double square pattern combines modern and traditional style. The external cladding is made from honeycomb-reinforced Aluminium panels in the shape of petals. The characteristic silhouette of the Control Tower truly became a beacon with the addition of smooth lighting along the structure. This was done by installing back-lit LED glass panels between the petal-shaped Aluminium cladding. The Control Tower stands as a proud icon for the world’s largest airport of the future. As development work continues and capacity keeps growing, this Control Tower will be routinely upgraded and a second will be erected in the centre of the airfield.
