Runways
Runway 2 is the second of five parallel runways at Al Maktoum International (DWC), which altogether will be able to handle 100 flights at any given time. The runway will be built during Phase 1 with enough distance from Runway 1 to make space for additional support facilities and the fifth and final runway by the ultimate phase.
Jump to section
Phase 1
The first phase of AMI will start with the construction of theWest Terminal Building, connected to the city through a new express metro line, and the Concourse 1 with 100 contact gates.
The 4-stations underground APM will be built to enable the passenger’s fast connection.
The airfield will see the construction of Runway 2 and 3 along with the Ground Service Equipment road network, and an undergroundBaggage Handling Systemfor quick baggage transfer.
Energy centres, Fire safety and other Support Facilitiesfor Duty free and catering, maintenance and storage will be constructed at the North side of the airport to provide the best operational and commercial support services.
Phase 1 will provide a capacity of 130 M annual passengers.
Phase 2
In the next decade, the second phase of AMI will further enhance the level of service with the construction of theConcourse 2, parallel and identical to Concourse 1, enabling the seamless flow of150 M annual passengers across 200 contact gates.
3 new APM stations will be built to serve Concourse 2, as well the expansion of the ground service equipment roads network and the automated Baggage Handling System
Support Facilities will be further expanded to match the new airport capacity.
Ultimate Phase
The final development phase will start with the construction of Concourse 3 and 4, and the East Terminal, enabling ground transportation access from the East side of the city.
This will include a connection to the Etihad Rail and the new metro line. Runway 4 and 5 will complete the airfield enabling 4 aircraft parallel approaches. The APM will be expanded to become a 14-station system connecting all airside buildings in a giant loop.
In its ultimate configuration, AMI will be able to serve annually 260 M passengers though 400 contact gates and process 15 M tons of cargo.
About This Project
Laying four more runways at the world’s future aviation hub
Runway 2 will be laid along with Runway 3 during the second phase of development at DWC. Like all future runways at the airport, Runway 2 will be a 4.5-kilometre stretch equipped with the most intelligent aircraft guiding systems.
While Runway 3 is constructed on the northern side of the airfield, Runway 2 will be laid parallelly to Runway 1 with sufficient space in between to make the future construction of Runway 5 as well as the South Support facilities. It will also be the closest runway to Concourse 1. Close to Phase-I, the South Support Facilities will be constructed in between Runway 1 and Runway 3, accommodating space for rapid exits, double taxiways and wide roads for ground service equipment. These measures for safety and efficiency will be maximised during Phase-I, when the fifth runway passes through the space between Runway 1 and Runway 2.
In the final stage of the airport’s construction, Runway 2 will be parallel to Runway 1 and 5, with more than 750 metres of space between them. This will allow for up to four aircraft to simultaneously approach the airfield, in addition to facilitating the movement of up to 100 flights at any given time. Concourse 3 will also be built, as close to Runway 2 as Concourse 1. The runway will see increase flight and passenger traffic, which will be seamlessly processed with the APM mover linking the concourses and transporting passengers to the closest boarding gate.
